What You May Want to Know About A Grid Tie Inverter

Surely, not a lot of people know what a grid tie inverter is. Well, what is a grid tie inverter?

A grid tie inverter, or GTI, is an electrical machine used to convert what is called direct current (DC) electricity to alternating current (AC) electricity. After the conversions from DC to AC, the grid tie inverter feeds the electricity into an ‘electrical grid’. An electrical grid is where the electricity source of households, buildings, etc. comes from.

A grid tie inverter is usually utilized to convert direct current created by a number of renewable energy sources like solar cells or wind turbines. Solar cells or panels are the equipments that are commonly laid out on the roofs of houses or buildings.

This is for them to readily absorb the rays of the sun so that an apparatus such as a grid tie inverter could transform it to usable energy. On the other hand, wind turbines appear as unattached airplane turbines commonly located on a remote seashore or island. The said areas present strong winds and are ideal locations for the wind turbines.

The scientific or technical name of a GTI is “grid-interactive inverter”. A grid tie inverter can also be termed as synchronous inverters.

Businesses and residences who own a grid-tied electrical system have a few benefits.

Evidently, having machineries like solar panels and/or wind turbines and a grid tie inverter would save them a lot of electricity expenses. Acquisition of the mentioned machines may be very expensive at first. But, if people consider the long run, they will significantly cut costs on energy fees as they are generating most, if not all, of their own electricity.

The main difference between a standard electrical inverter and a grid-tie inverter is that the latter also ensures that the power supplied will be in phase with the grid power. This allows individuals with surplus power (wind, solar, etc) to sell the power back to the utility. This is sometimes called “spinning the meter backwards” as that is what literally happens.

Another gain is that the government and its energy institutions would compensate the electricity that their electrical system delivers to an electrical grid. Two of the more common ways that the government will compensate households or businesses is through “net metering” and “feed-in tariff”.

In the case of net metering, the owner of the renewable electrical power source obtains compensation from the value of its net power outflow. So for instance, in the course of a given month an energy system feeds 500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to the electrical grid and utilizes 100 kWh from the grid, the residence or business will receive payment for the 400 kWr ‘residual’.

On the other hand, a feed-in tariff is wherein the energy producers are compensated for every kilowatt hour conveyed to the electrical grid. The costs of reimbursements would depend upon the contract of the producer with a power company or authority.

Grid Tie Inverter in the USA

In the U.S., a grid tie inverter and the related energy systems are covered under the specifications of the NEC or National Electrical Code. It is a regionally acceptable standard for the secure setting up of electrical equipment and wiring such as the grid tie inverter.

Now that more folks know about these facts on what is a grid tie inverter, renewable energy sources and grid-tied electrical systems, they could maybe suggest to their bosses and/or companies to invest in such technologies. Not only will this save their businesses form the high cost of electricity, their companies would greatly help the cause of the environment.
